The Wild West
by Kim Whalen aka Maddie James

Kensington Precious Gems # 101, 1997

Winner of the Calico Trails Cameo Award

Playing good sport to appease her best friend was one thing, but sophisticated Gail Martin was hardly equipped for a Colorado camping trip. Especially when their mountain guide was a rough-edged cowboy who was as untamed as the wilderness…

A Great Way to Begin...

After I found Maddie, I searched her books and found them all. I started with her very first novel- The Wild West.

From the get-go you're given the opportunity to laugh and sympathize with Gail when she's thrown from her horse and when she didn't pack the gear properly. Her aggravation with her friend is understandable, being brought along under false pretenses, but over the course of the novel you see the unfolding of a beautiful love story as Gail works hard to prove to Bill that she's just as capable as anyone to ride the trail, even with all the catastrophes that followed and her love/hate relationship with him.

And as for Bill, he's the cowboy of cowboys. He didn't want to care about some spoiled city girl pretending to be a country girl, but his softening toward her is enough to make any woman go weak in the knees. I love the bathing scene...it's just delicious. Gail's solitary journey through the woods and her recognition of what she really felt for Bill and her determination to prove she was worthy of him by braving the storm to make it to the train station was moving.

In the end it took the city coming to the country to bring the country to the city.

I still wonder though....was Shelby ever able to meet Mack halfway?

OMIGOODNESS! Shelby and Mack! Thank you, Taryn. I'd not thought of them in years. They DO need their own story, don't they? I suppose I'll have to go back and reread The Wild West to see where they left off? I love books that spin off of other stories.

What do the rest of you think? Do you like it when secondary characters get a story of their own?

Re: A Great Way to Begin...

Yep, I do. Since I started reading new author's I've noticed it's becoming a popular trend in the writing world to have sequels or series.
